Five key numbers significantly impact your risk of heart disease, and being aware of these can help you maintain a healthy heart.

Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is assessed at nearly every doctor’s visit because it’s a straightforward measurement that offers insights into your health and cardiovascular condition. It comprises two figures that gauge the pressure within your arteries at different moments.

The first number, known as the systolic pressure, reflects the force your heart exerts to circulate blood throughout your body. The second number, the diastolic pressure, measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart is at rest.

Blood pressure can fluctuate throughout the day, influenced by recent activities and your emotional state. A healthy blood pressure is considered to be less than 120/80, while high blood pressure begins at 130/80 and above.1

Lipid Panel

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance present in all body cells. It plays crucial roles in overall health, yet not all cholesterol types are beneficial. Certain forms of cholesterol heighten our risk of cardiovascular disease more than others.

Recommended lipid levels for the general population include:2

Total cholesterol: 200 mg/dL or less

LDL cholesterol: 100 mg/dL or less

HDL cholesterol: 60 mg/dL or higher

Non-HDL cholesterol: 130 mg/dL or less

Triglycerides: 150 mg/dL or less

Your ideal numbers might vary depending on your age, gender, and health status.

Inflammation

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury or illness, intended to facilitate healing before returning to normal levels. However, many people experience chronic high levels of inflammation, which can elevate the risk of various diseases, including heart disease.

Inflammation can be measured through markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP), which tend to rise in the presence of significant inflammation. Normal values are CRP less than 0.3 mg/L and hs-CRP less than 1 mg/dL. Higher levels may suggest an increased risk of heart disease or other conditions.3

Waist circumference, discussed below, is another indicator of inflammation that can be easily measured at home.

Blood Sugar

Blood sugar, or glucose, is our bodies' primary energy source. Essential for daily functioning, its levels must be tightly controlled. Excessive or insufficient blood sugar can seriously affect our health.

Chronically high blood sugar heightens the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Health care professionals typically check two metrics to assess blood sugar: your fasting blood sugar and HbA1C, which reflects average blood sugar over the past three months. These values should be:4

Fasting blood sugar: 100 mg/dL or less

HbA1c: 5.7% or less

Waist Circumference

Waist circumference, measured around the abdomen at the level of the iliac crest, serves as an indicator of abdominal fat. Excessive abdominal fat is a risk factor for heart disease and metabolic syndrome.5

For men: less than 40 inches (102 centimeters)

For women: less than 35 inches (88 centimeters)

Lifestyle Habits to Support Healthy Heart Numbers

Even with elevated numbers, you can significantly support your heart through healthy lifestyle choices.

Diet: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and lean proteins can enhance blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. Limit your intake of sodium, saturated fats, and sugars.

Healthy weight: Maintaining an ideal weight, especially around the midsection, alleviates stress on the heart, improves insulin resistance, and promotes circulatory health. A BMI calculator can help determine your ideal body weight.

Exercise: Regular physical activity fortifies the heart and maintains healthy blood pressure. The American Heart Association suggests at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week.

Hydration: Drinking sufficient fluids throughout the day is essential for healthy blood circulation.

Manage stress: Although high stress can increase blood pressure and disrupt sleep, thus impairing cardiovascular health, practices like meditation can foster a healthy response to stress.

Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep nightly to support overall heart health and hormone regulation.

Quit smoking: Ceasing smoking reduces cardiovascular damage and enhances overall heart health.

Mastering Your Numbers for a Stronger Heart

Understanding your crucial heart health numbers forms the foundation for maintaining a healthy heart and reducing your risk factors. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol, inflammation markers, blood sugar, and waist circumference enables proactive health management.

Always consult with your healthcare provider to understand your risk levels and ensure that your health metrics are properly monitored for optimal heart health.

Take care of yourself.

BubbForest

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Omega-3 essential fatty acids may support cardiovascular health, healthy cognitive function, joint health and much more.2 However, krill oil may also offer some advantages over other marine oils for getting your daily dose of omega-3s.

Difference Between Krill Oil and Fish Oil

With krill oil supplements becoming so popular, many people are wondering about the most significant differences between krill oil and fish oil. You may have taken fish oil for a long time and now wonder if it’s worth switching from fish oil to krill oil, or you may be new to taking omega-3 supplements altogether. Either way, in this article we hope to answer all your questions about the differences between the two oils and the potential advantages of both.

Fish Oil vs Krill Oil

There are several differences between fish oil and krill oil, including the sources of the oils used in the supplements, the nutrients and nutritional values within the supplements and how your body absorbs those nutrients.

1. Is Krill Oil the Same as Fish Oil?

Although both supplements contain omega-3 fatty acids and the sources for both supplements are ocean-dwellers, the two oils come from very different places.

Fish oil can come from a variety of fish including anchovies, halibut, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines, cod and albacore tuna. The fish used for making fish oil supplements may be either wild-caught or farmed.

Krill, on the other hand, are very tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans that live in the waters of Antarctica and feed on plankton.3 Because they are in the same family as shrimp, people who have shellfish allergies should avoid taking krill oil supplements.

2. Krill Oil May Be Absorbed Better Than Fish Oil

Research suggests that although both supplements contain EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, the fatty acids from krill may be absorbed better by our bodies.4 The omega-3 fatty acids in krill are bound to phospholipids4 which allows them to be released into the bloodstream and cells at a more efficient rate. As a result, you might be able to take less (which could mean smaller, potentially easier to swallow pills) and still enjoy the same health benefits as fish oil. And as a bonus, krill oil doesn’t cause fishy burps like fish oil can.

3. Krill Oil Contains Other Nutrients

Krill oil also contains other nutrients such as phospholipids, choline, and astaxanthin, the carotenoid antioxidant. Choline is an essential precursor to acetylcholine, a stimulatory neurotransmitter. It's involved in healthy brain function and essential for normal cellular function.

Astaxanthin is a high-powered antioxidant with a molecular structure that makes it very effective at neutralizing free radicals. This super-carotenoid offers many benefits of its own that are complementary to the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, including supporting healthy skin,5 eyes,6 weight7 and brain health. You can read more about astaxanthin in the article Astaxanthin Benefits.

Is Krill Oil Better Than Fish Oil?

The omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil may be more accessible for your body to absorb, and you get a few bonus nutrients in krill oil as well, but there are some situations in which fish oil may be a better choice. Most importantly, people who are allergic to shellfish shouldn’t take krill oil supplements, but if they don’t have allergies to other types of fish, they may be able to take fish oil (just read the label carefully and consult with your doctor). Krill oil is a rich source of phosphatidylcholine, a derivative of choline, which plays an important role in cellular membrane structure, thereby helping to regulate lipid metabolism. Krill oil, such as found in this formula, can also help promote healthy skin by increasing levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the body to support elasticity and hydration of skin tissues.

Fish oil may also provide other advantages, including higher total concentrations of DHA and EPA per supplement, and fish oil is usually less expensive than krill oil. But remember that your body may absorb the omega-3 fatty acids from krill more readily than fish oil, so the lower amount of DHA and EPA in krill oil may be better absorbed than the higher amounts listed in fish oil. Additionally, krill oil naturally contains high levels of phosphatidylcholine, which is a derivative of choline that plays important roles in cellular membrane structure, helping to regulate lipid metabolism, and in healthy cognitive function.

Which is Better: Krill Oil or Fish Oil?

To demonstrate some of the differences between the nutrients in fish oil vs. krill oil, we’ve broken down a few of our favorite fish oil and krill oil formulas:

High Concentrate Omega-3 (SWE095) — 1.14 g contains 680 mg EPA/DHA combined, sourced from a blend of anchovies, herring, mackerel and/or sardines

Lemon Flavor Omega-3 Fish Oil (SW1253) — One gram contains 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA, sourced from anchovies and sardines

Super EPA Fish Oil (SWE026) — One gram contains 300 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA, sourced from anchovies, sardines and mackerel

100% Pure Krill Oil (SWE059) — One gram (two 500 mg capsules) contains 120 mg EPA and 55 mg DHA, plus 80 mcg astaxanthin sourced from krill

Maximum Strength Krill Oil (SWE065) — One gram contains 120 mg EPA and 55 mg DHA, plus 80 mcg astaxanthin sourced from krill. The added benefit of including astaxanthin comes from astaxanthin’s ability to cross the cellular membrane, providing protection against oxidative stress.

Krill Oil Dosage

There is no standard intake of fish oil, krill oil or any other omega-3 supplement. An appropriate dose depends on age, health and other conditions.8 If you’re not sure how much you should take, check with your doctor or nutritionist first, but research has provided some intake suggestions. Studies have shown that consuming at least 200 mg of DHA9 and 220 mg of EPA10 daily is linked with potential health benefits, including heart health, cognitive support, mood support and more.8,10 And the American Heart Association recommends one gram of combined EPA and DHA daily to support heart health.11

Since the omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil are more easily absorbed than standard fish oil, you may be able to take smaller doses of omega-3 fatty acids from krill oil and still get the same benefits. Most krill oil supplements are available in doses of one gram, providing around 120 mg of DHA and 55 mg of EPA per dose, along with 80 mcg of astaxanthin. This is particularly beneficial, as astaxanthin provides antioxidant support for healthy and moisturized skin, exercise performance and healthy aging and may support healthy blood flow to support ocular health and immune support.

BubbForest's Commitment to Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Krill Oil

Promoting your personal health without putting the health of the environment or marine ecosystems in jeopardy is the best scenario. Environmentally conscious consumers are concerned that commercially harvesting krill could threaten the many marine animals that rely on krill as the main component of their diet. BubbForest understands those concerns and thinks it’s essential to opt for sustainable supplements, which is why it works with suppliers that care as much about sustainable, eco-friendly practices.

The krill biomass is among the largest on the planet, and just a small fraction is caught each year for human nutrition. We would need to consume much more krill to cause overfishing, and to make sure that doesn’t happen, we use Superba2™ krill oil for many of our supplements.

Superba2™ krill oil is produced by Aker BioMarine of Norway, which uses patented Eco-Harvesting technology to ensure optimal freshness and prevent unnecessary bycatch. Eco-Harvesting results in minimal environmental impact, reflecting Aker’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices.

Krill Oil or Fish Oil?

In short, this oil is "krillin’ it" in the omega-3 nutrition scene. Given the potential advantages of krill oil over fish oil, it should come as no surprise that krill oil is quickly becoming the most popular source of essential fatty acids.

We hope this post has helped you better understand the differences between krill oil and fish oil. Some plants produce resveratrol in response to stress, UV radiation, and other potentially harmful factors.3 Resveratrol has been the subject of numerous studies, both human and otherwise, to determine its potential health impacts.

Is Resveratrol Really Good for You?

As the subject of numerous studies, resveratrol has demonstrated many positive health benefits. However, it is important to note that not all studies have involved human participants over extended periods. To date, researchers have emphasized the protective antioxidant effects of resveratrol, its potential support for cardiovascular tissues such as arteries and the heart1, and its possible anti-aging benefits.2

Studies on resveratrol suggest that it is one of the primary antioxidant compounds in red wine that links drinking red wine with potential cardiovascular benefits,5 contributing to the “French Paradox". Despite high-fat diets, people in France tend to have fewer heart concerns than Americans who also consume high-fat diets. Researchers believe the higher red wine consumption in France, which is rich in resveratrol, might be a key factor.5

Benefits of Resveratrol

Resveratrol for Healthy Aging and Skin Benefits

The antioxidant properties of resveratrol may help protect cells from free radical damage, which occurs due to everyday bodily functions such as exercising and digestion. It may also help protect the skin against photo-aging.2 Additionally, resveratrol might affect enzymes known as sirtuins, which play a role in the aging process.3,6Resveratrol is commonly included in anti-aging skin creams for its potential benefits.

Resveratrol for Cardiovascular Tissue and Blood Health

Research suggests that resveratrol may enhance circulation, support healthy blood lipid levels, and aid in lipid metabolism.1 It also has unique and significant protective effects on cardiovascular tissue, potentially supporting heart health.1 A type of tea rich in resveratrol, known as Itadori, meaning “wellbeing,” has been used for centuries in Asian countries to support heart health.7

Resveratrol Sources

Common resveratrol sources include the skins of red grapes, peanuts, blueberries, cranberries, soy, cocoa and dark chocolate, pistachios, mulberries, bilberries, and Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese knotweed), which is often used in resveratrol supplements for its high resveratrol content. Some nonedible plants also produce resveratrol, such as certain grasses, pine bark, ivy, and lilies.8

Resveratrol levels in foods can vary based on farming and cultivation methods as well as environmental stressors.7 Here are typical resveratrol amounts in some common food sources:

Raw Peanuts: 1 cup (146 g) contains 0.01 - 0.26 mg resveratrol3

Boiled Peanuts: 1 cup (180 g) contains 0.32 - 1.28 mg resveratrol3

Peanut Butter: 1 cup (258 g) contains 0.04 - 0.13 mg resveratrol3

Red Grapes: 1 cup (160 g) contains 0.24 - 1.25 mg resveratrol3

Dark Chocolate: approximately 0.4 mg of resveratrol per 1 kg of dark chocolate7

Cranberries: 0.5 - 0.8 mg resveratrol per 1 kg of cranberries and up to 1 mg per 1 kg of cranberry juice7

Blueberries: 0.3 mg resveratrol per 1 kg of blueberries and up to 16 mg per liter of blueberry juice7

Resveratrol in Wine

With red wine being one of the richest sources of resveratrol, it’s only natural to wonder if there’s a difference in the levels of resveratrol from one wine to another. As with other sources, the resveratrol content in wine depends on various factors, including the climate in which the grapes were grown, UV light exposure, the variety of grapes, and winemaking technology used. 8 It may even vary from year to year.

Which Wine Has the Most Resveratrol?

In 1998, researchers at Cornell University studied 100 red wines from both the U.S. and abroad and found that New York state red wines had higher levels of resveratrol than comparable wines from other regions globally. Pinot Noirs from New York had the highest resveratrol levels of all. Researchers attributed the high amounts of resveratrol in New York’s wines to the humid climate, which they suspect causes grapes to produce more resveratrol to combat mildew.9

Another study conducted in 2007 recorded the following amounts of resveratrol per 5 oz of various types of red wine:3

Pinot Noir - 0.5 mg

Merlot - 0.4 mg

Zweigelt - 0.3 mg

Shiraz - 0.3 mg

Cabernet Sauvignon - 0.2 mg

Red wines average (global) - 0.3 mg

Topical Resveratrol and Resveratrol Creams

If you have explored anti-aging skincare products, you might have noticed resveratrol as a popular ingredient in some creams and oils. Resveratrol has shown potential for promoting skin health, and researchers say the antioxidant properties of resveratrol may help protect skin from photo-aging and oxidative stress.2 Many anti-aging creams with resveratrol also contain other ingredients that may support skin health, such as aloe, vitamin A, vitamin E, cocoa butter, and even CoQ10. Check out BubbForest Health’s Resveratrol Wrinkle Cream with Hyaluronic Acid and Andalou Natural’s Age Defying Resveratrol Q10 Night Repair Cream.

Resveratrol Supplements

Resveratrol supplements are a convenient way to obtain the potent antioxidant benefits of resveratrol daily. While there is no officially recommended dosage, resveratrol supplements are typically taken in doses of 50-250 mg per capsule, up to 250 - 500 mg per day. BubbForest's most popular resveratrol supplements combine red wine extract with grape seed and resveratrol from Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese knotweed) for a potent antioxidant blend.

BubbForest Ultra Resveratrol 100 Supplement - 100 mg resveratrol from Polygonum cuspidatum

BubbForest Ultra Resveratrol 250 Supplement - 250 mg resveratrol for maximum support, also from Polygonum cuspidatum

BubbForest Ultra Resveratrol Complex - with benefits from three sources: red wine extract (100 mg), grape seed extract (50 mg), and resveratrol from Polygonum root extract (30 mg)

Resveratrol Side Effects

Studies conducted thus far have not reported any severe side effects of taking resveratrol, even when large doses were used in the studies.10 However, resveratrol supplements may interact with blood thinners and other medications like aspirin and ibuprofen10, so always consult your doctor before taking resveratrol supplements, especially if you are on other medications.

Benefits of Resveratrol

Many of the potential benefits of resveratrol are still being studied, but it has gained a lot of attention due to its healthy aging and protective benefits for our health. While resveratrol may not be the answer to all of our anti-aging and longevity questions, it could play an important role. And beyond the French Paradox, studies have shown that people who drink wine may have a longevity advantage.11

That shouldn’t be an excuse to drink in excess, of course, but maybe it’s a nudge to choose wine over other alcoholic beverages, or to choose a nonalcoholic beverage with resveratrol, like cranberry juice instead. You could also skip the extra calories and try resveratrol supplements to support your health.

For more healthy aging tips, check out MSM Benefits: Joint Health & Beyond.

About Bushra Hassan, MBA, RD & LDN

Bushra is an expert in supplement development, nutrition education, wellness coaching, and product brand management. If you have a runner in your life, you probably know just how dedicated they are to the sport and that they’re committed to long-term performance. Not all of us run marathons, but that doesn’t change how important it is for us to get out there again and again and log those miles consistently. And for most joggers, running just isn’t negotiable.

So, the best gift you can give a runner is support for their growth in the sport and for quick workout recovery. You can do that by giving them the gift of proper sports nutrition for runners. Here are some of our top nutritional picks for runners.

1. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) Powder for Exercise Recovery

MSM encourages the formation of strong cartilage, tendons, and ligaments to help protect joints. MSM may also help soothe muscles during recovery, provide antioxidant properties to protect against free radicals and oxidative stress related to exercise, and help support the immune system after training.1,2

Research has shown that mixing 100 mg of MSM per kg of body weight into pre-workout water resulted in an increase in total antioxidant capacity after activity, as compared to individuals who didn't consume MSM before their workout.2 So, give your favorite athlete a gift that'll truly be useful in their training regimen: MSM powder that easily mixes into their pre- or post-workout water bottle.

2. Premium Electrolytes Without Added Sugar

Electrolytes are essential for keeping runners hydrated, but many electrolyte drinks contain added sugars and ingredients that might not support a runner’s healthy lifestyle. BubbForest Potassium Gluconate delivers a powerful electrolyte mineral known to support nervous system health, cardiovascular health, and to promote energy metabolism. For added support, check out BubbForest Ultra 1,000 mg Energy C with Electrolytes, which contains additional vitamins and minerals that are great for runners, including vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

3. Beets for Stamina and Energy

Beets are a nutritional powerhouse for runners. In addition to valuable vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, beets also include nitrates, which according to research, can support circulation and muscular oxygenation.4BubbForest Ultra Beet Juice is an excellent way for runners to add this nutritive food to their daily diet in a convenient capsule form. Or try BubbForest Ultra Beet Root NO+ for a quick nitric oxide boost to optimize energy and stamina.

4. High Energy Complex for Physical Performance

BubbForest Ultra High Energy Complex is stacked with energizers like eleuthero root, gotu kola, and nutrient-dense bee pollen along with a potent royal jelly concentrate. This unique formula is an invigorating energy blend that fights fatigue and supports mental and physical performance. Gotu kola may also help improve circulation in the legs and feet.5 And eleuthero root is often used to promote stamina and athletic performance.6

5. Magnesium for Mind and Body Health

There are many types of magnesium and the benefits of this mineral for athletes are exponential. Magnesium helps promote cellular energy, muscle contraction and relaxation, nerve, bone, and cardiovascular health plus more.7 Try it in BubbForest Premium Triple Magnesium Complex or Mellow Mag magnesium powder drink. A bath or foot soak with Magnesium Chloride Flakes (Epsom salt) helps soothe tired muscles and promotes recovery.

6. Probiotics for Runners

A healthy gut microbiome is essential for everyone. After all, more than 70% of your immune system is in your digestive tract.8 But a healthy gut flora may have even more benefits for runners, especially during warmer weather. Research suggests that supplementation with a multistrain probiotic may increase running time before fatigue in warm weather.9

Plus, running is a strenuous exercise that puts stress on the immune system, so giving the immune system a boost with probiotics is a great idea for runners. Choose a probiotic blend like BubbForest Ultra Probiotic Complex, which contains a variety of friendly probiotic strains.

7. Vitamin D for Bone Health and Performance

You might expect that since many runners spend a lot of time outdoors, that exposure to the sun is meeting their vitamin D needs, but a 2008 study at the Cooper Clinic unveiled that 75% of runners that averaged 20 hours per week had low levels of vitamin D.10 What's more, studies show that the great majority of adults worldwide (more than 88 percent of the global population) have suboptimal levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D plays a role in many processes affecting bone health, muscle contraction, nerve stimulation, and immune support, plus vitamin D may increase muscular strength and the size of fast-twitch muscles.11 Vitamin D is vital for runners, and everyone else too!

8. Protein Supplements for Runners

According to the International Society of Sports Nutrition, people who exercise regularly, like runners, should consume between 1.4 to 2 g of protein per kg of body weight each day to optimize their training.12 Also, the timing of protein consumption may boost recovery and lean body mass.

A full report released by the society notes that consuming proteins or amino acids “in the hours immediately before and during exercise” has been shown to improve muscle repair and optimize strength.12 Also, protein supplements like whey protein powder may provide an anabolic response similar to free form amino acids.12

That’s great news, especially considering the idea of eating a steak in the hours before going for a run seems out of the question. BubbForest Ultra Whey Protein Powder is a better idea. It’s absorbed quickly and provides the muscle-supporting proteins and amino acids runners need without bogging them down.

The Best Gifts for Runners

Buying gifts for runners can be a little tricky sometimes since runners need less equipment for their sport than many other athletes. But every runner needs proper sports nutrition to help them perform their best and recover fully. The best gifts for runners are the gifts that help them keep running and improving their game. So, use this guide to put together a healthy care package for the runner in your life.

About Bushra Hassan, MBA, RD & LDN

Bushra is an expert in supplement development, nutrition education, wellness coaching, and product brand management. You often hear about essential vitamins such as vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and even vitamin C, including how to boost your levels and regain balance. However, there are underdogs in this narrative worth your attention. Potassium is one such underdog, and understanding its importance and recognizing signs of deficiency is crucial.

What is Potassium?

Potassium is essential for your body's normal functioning daily. It is an electrolyte that aids nerve function and muscle contraction, helps maintain a regular heartbeat, and supports cellular nutrition and detoxification. It has also been linked to healthy blood flow.1

The recommended daily intake of potassium is 4,700 mg. Although this might seem high, achieving this goal is feasible given the availability of potassium-rich foods. Nevertheless, it is possible to consume all the right foods and still experience low potassium levels.

What is Potassium Deficiency & What Causes Low Potassium Levels?

Low potassium, or hypokalemia, refers to potassium levels in the blood that are below the normal range of 3.6 to 5.2 millimoles per liter (mmol/L).2

The most common cause of low potassium levels is increased urination. Vomiting and diarrhea can also lead to significant potassium loss from the digestive tract.

Potassium Needs

Every cell in your body requires potassium to function properly. One of the first signs of low potassium is general fatigue. If you are getting adequate sleep, eating healthily, and exercising but still feel exhausted, you might be experiencing the effects of low potassium levels.

Weakness, muscle spasms, and cramps are other indicators of low potassium, as potassium is crucial for smooth muscle contraction. An increase in cramps, especially during exercise, might suggest low potassium levels, since significant amounts can be lost through sweat. If fatigue persists without a clear cause, assess your diet and consult a doctor if no improvements are seen.

Uneasy Gut (& Poor Diet) & Potassium Deficiency

Many factors can upset your stomach on any given day, causing bloating, cramps, or constipation. Low potassium levels can slow down your body’s natural rhythms and processes, including those of your digestive system.

Next time you sit down for a meal, examine your plate. Does it display vibrant colors, or just bland shades of “meat and potatoes”? Symptoms of potassium deficiency can often be traced back to poor dietary choices. If your diet is typically Western, it is likely you are not meeting your daily potassium needs. Consider incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables and possibly adding a potassium supplement into your diet.

Potassium Needs & Heart Health

Extremely low potassium levels can also impact heart health.2 If you have any cardiovascular concerns, it is crucial to consult your doctor immediately.

Potassium is important because it helps balance sodium levels. Many people consume excessive amounts of salty foods and insufficient fruits and vegetables, disrupting this balance and affecting blood flow.

Foods High in Potassium

Boosting your potassium intake can be easily achieved with a few dietary adjustments. Foods rich in potassium include leafy greens, fresh fruits, and root vegetables. If a coach ever advised you to eat more bananas, it’s because they are packed with potassium and aid in muscle performance. However, your options extend beyond bananas to include:

Leafy greens like spinach and collards

Fruits from vines such as grapes and blackberries

Root vegetables like carrots and potatoes

Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit

For more information, visit Top Potassium Food Sources & Potassium Health Benefits.

Be well.

BubbForest

About Lindsey Toth, MS, RD

Lindsey is a nationally recognized registered dietitian and nutritionist with a soft spot for ice cream. Just because something is popular doesn’t always mean it can live up to the hype. However, more and more studies are confirming the powerful health benefits that berberine offers.

Still, you may be wondering, what is berberine? What are the benefits of berberine? How should I take berberine?

To answer these questions and more, we’ve prepared this helpful guide so you can better understand what berberine is and all the ways it may be able to support your heart and digestive health while also promoting your weight management and cognitive support goals.

What is Berberine?

Before we delve into all the health benefits of berberine, let’s take a moment to better understand what berberine is. Berberine is a plant chemical that can be found in species such as tree turmeric, Oregon grape and European barberry, to name a few.

When this yellow-colored bioactive compound is extracted from one of those shrubs (loosely referred to as belonging to the berberis family), berberine has many uses, from serving as a natural dye to offering a range of health benefits.1

First used by herbalists in ancient China, berberine has a long history, but what exactly are the benefits of taking berberine?

What Are the Benefits of Berberine?

Berberine offers many health benefits to a variety of organs and systems throughout the body. This is potentially due to the way berberine interacts with enzymes and even certain genes.13

For example, berberine has been shown to activate a powerful enzyme sometimes called the “metabolic master switch” which is found in the cells of the brain, heart and other major organs.1 By activating this enzyme, berberine promotes better and more efficient metabolism.

But the benefits don’t end there. In fact, berberine has been studied for its health benefits in a number of bodily functions from weight management to heart health. Berberine may even benefit gut health and more.

Let’s consider the benefits of berberine for specific applications:

Berberine for Weight Loss

Berberine has been studied for its positive effects on weight management for individuals with certain health conditions.14 It is thought that this supplement may contribute to healthy weight management due to its influence on hormones like insulin and the overall formation of fat cells in the body.2

Berberine has also been shown in research studies to help block a protein used to form new fat cells in the body,7 further aiding the management of a healthy weight in adults. Studies are still ongoing, but the weight supporting action of berberine has been well documented and has shown to help with overall BMI and waist circumference in some findings as well.15,16

Of course, taking berberine alone isn’t enough to maintain a healthy weight, but when used in conjunction with a sensible diet and healthy exercise routine, the results may surprise you.

Berberine for Heart Health

Berberine may also offer real and long-lasting benefits for your heart health. For example, taking berberine has been shown to support blood pressure readings already within the normal range, in addition to supporting a healthy blood glucose response.2

There is increasing research indicating that the heart health benefits of berberine may be more extensive than originally expected, having healthful impacts on a variety of cardiovascular markers.3

This is particularly true in the case of supporting blood lipid levels already within the normal range,4 since maintaining healthy cholesterol is a critical element to overall heart health as part of a healthy aging process.5

Berberine’s heart health benefits may also be linked to its influence on gut health.

Berberine for Gut Health

Studies have shown that berberine can improve gut health by promoting certain healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. This is important, as the types of microflorae positively impacted by berberine can have additional healthy influences on markers of heart health.6

Intestinal integrity has also been shown to benefit from berberine as its use is linked to promoting a more diverse microflora and helping balance the species of bacteria found within the gut.6

Along with aiding in the production of bile and bilirubin, which are used by the body to break down fats and aid in the metabolism of fat-soluble vitamins,8 berberine has also been traditionally used to help the body to detox itself by promoting its natural system for cleansing.8

Berberine for Other Benefits

Related to its effects on gut health, berberine has also been shown in studies to benefit liver health. This occurs as berberine may help block harmful elements within the liver and may also provide long-term support for the liver and its function.6

Berberine may offer additional benefits to your overall wellness by providing support for brain health. In fact, some studies have shown that berberine can have a healthy impact on the dopaminergic system of the brain.9 This system is involved in the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain which affect cognitive health and elements of mood such as motivation and a sense of reward.10

How Should I Take Berberine?

As with any health supplement, it’s always best to consult a healthcare professional before adding it to your established health routine. That said, there are some general guidelines you can follow when taking berberine. The standard dosage is anywhere from 900 to 2,000 mg a day, spread over three to four doses to compensate for its short half-life. To take advantage of berberine’s ability to mitigate spikes in lipids and blood sugar, take this supplement either before or shortly after a meal.

Does Berberine Have Any Side Effects?

Berberine has been associated with reports of some gastrointestinal side effects but is generally considered safe for adults to take for up to six months.11,12

What Can Berberine Do for You?

Berberine has been used for thousands of years by people from all over the world to help support health and improve a wide variety of concerns. How can berberine benefit your health? In more ways than you may have previously thought.

Consider supplementing your healthy diet with BubbForest berberine supplements.

You be well, now

BubbForest

This article has been medically reviewed and accepted.

About Dr. Brian Wu, MD

Dr. Wu is a general, adult psychiatrist who has a special interest in helping people become unstuck from symptoms that may block living in full alignment with their values or aspirations. This organic compound can be found in certain foods and is absorbed by all tissues in the body.

Since this essential nutrient cannot be stored in the body, it is important to get adequate amounts of niacin through a healthy diet, though supplemental forms can also ensure that you’re getting the proper dose.

But what is niacin good for exactly?

Let’s get to know this heart-healthy vitamin and discover what makes it a vital nutrient for your cardiovascular system.

What Does Niacin Do for the Body?

One of the main functions of niacin in the body is to convert food into energy by aiding enzymatic processes. Niacin is a precursor for two coenzymes: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP).

Absorbed niacin is converted to NAD to initiate catabolic reactions (the breakdown of larger molecules into smaller ones) like glycolysis. This process creates ATP, or usable energy. NAD can be further converted into NADP—a cofactor that uses energy to help synthesize molecules like cholesterol and fats.1

Niacin also supports cholesterol levels by promoting healthy cholesterol (HDL).2 Along with the potential to maintain healthy triglyceride levels, niacin can aid in supporting healthy blood pressure levels by helping to relax blood vessels.3,4

Benefits of Niacin

Supports healthy cholesterol and blood-lipid levels

Converts food into energy (cellular metabolism)

Helps maintain healthy blood pressure

Acts as an antioxidant and promotes DNA repair

Nourishes skin health

Foods That Contain Niacin

Liver such as beef and chicken

Red meat like beef and pork

Chicken breast

Fish such as salmon and tuna

Turkey breast

Brown rice

Niacin Vs. Vitamin B

A common misconception is comparing niacin to vitamin B when, in fact, niacin is vitamin B—specifically, Vitamin B3. All B vitamins are responsible for converting food into energy, but niacin also plays a significant role in maintaining healthy cholesterol and blood pressure.

Furthermore, various derivatives of niacin, such as niacinamide found in supplement form, are beneficial for skincare routines, while another form, inositol hexanicotinate, is known for supporting circulatory function by widening blood vessels to improve blood flow.

While all forms of niacin are B vitamins, not all B vitamins offer the same benefits as niacin.

How Much Niacin Should You Take?

The daily recommended dose of niacin for adults is 16 mg.5

For food sources, some recommended amounts to reach the daily value are:

Beef liver, 3 oz: 93% of the DV

Beef, ground, 90% lean, 3 oz: 36% of the DV

Pork, tenderloin, 3 oz: 39% of the DV

Chicken breast, 3 oz: 64% of the DV

Salmon, sockeye, 3 oz: 54% of the DV

Tuna, light, canned in water and drained, 3 oz: 54% of the DV

Turkey breast, meat only, 3 oz: 63% of the DV

Rice, brown, 1 cup: 33% of the DV

Common Side Effects of Niacin

Some adverse effects of taking high dosages (30-50 mg of niacin) can lead to flushing, or a red color on the skin, accompanied by tingling, burning, and itching. More serious symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, and significant decreases in blood pressure.

Always consult your doctor before starting a new vitamin to ensure that it is safe and will not interact negatively with current medications.

Be well, now

BubbForest

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Let's explore this antioxidant in more detail, including how to select the resveratrol supplement that best suits your needs.

Sources of Resveratrol

The skins of grapes are one of the principal sources of resveratrol, which explains the higher levels found in red wine compared to white. This is due to the longer fermentation period of red wine with grape skins.

Clearly, consuming alcohol is not the optimal method for increasing this nutrient in your diet. Healthier alternatives include eating grapes or drinking grape juice. Additionally, resveratrol is found in peanuts, blueberries, cranberries, soy, cocoa, dark chocolate, pistachios, mulberries, bilberries, and Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese knotweed), the latter of which is often used in supplements due to its high resveratrol content.

Benefits of Resveratrol

The benefits of resveratrol are still under investigation; however, its potential to aid healthy aging may stem from its ability to combat free radicals and enhance skin longevity and protection. Resveratrol can decelerate photoaging in the skin (or signs of aging from prolonged UV exposure), maintaining a vibrant and healthy complexion.1 Coupled with its ability to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, it is highly regarded in the beauty industry.

This antioxidant also supports increased blood flow to the brain and cardiovascular health, making it a valuable choice for those seeking to maintain optimal circulation and heart health.2 Resveratrol may also aid in glucose metabolism and support healthy lipid levels, facilitating efficient regulation and energy transfer between cells.3

Forms of Resveratrol Supplements

Given its numerous health benefits, resveratrol is available in various forms. Depending on your health goals, one form may be more suitable than another. For instance, resveratrol creams are designed for skin health, while pills and capsules are geared towards maintaining cardiovascular health.

Common forms of resveratrol supplements include:

Pills or capsules

Topical formulas

Liquids

Trans Vs. Cis Resveratrol

Resveratrol exists in two isomeric forms: trans and cis. Both forms offer health benefits, but trans resveratrol is more bioavailable due to its open structure, making it the form most commonly studied.

It is not rare to find both of these forms in combination formulas for a multitude of health benefits. Thus, cis resveratrol also contributes to wellness, though its full range of benefits is still being explored.

Choosing a Resveratrol Supplement

When choosing a resveratrol supplement, consider several factors to ensure you receive the most benefits tailored to your unique needs, such as:

Dosage

Purity

Vegan or other dietary preferences

Typical dosages found in supplements range from 50-250 mg per capsule, with a daily maximum of 250 - 500 mg.
