They can be as simple as brushing your teeth morning and night or as specific as planning a workout targeting certain body areas. In the short term, routines help us achieve goals and manage daily needs. Long term, they are essential for establishing healthy habits.

If you're enthusiastic about organizing routines, you're among the fortunate ones. Some people thrive on creating charts, lists, and maintaining order, often also crafting homemade greeting cards. If that describes you, you'll find this article particularly enjoyable.

For others who might not be as organized and hesitated to read about routines, we're glad you stayed. There's plenty to learn here about enhancing your well-being, achieving more, and even improving yourself!

Benefits of a Routine

One of the most significant benefits of routines is their impact on stress and mood. They provide stability during life changes or events and help manage stress.1 Routines also support the commitment to healthy habits that foster an overall healthy lifestyle.

Routines can enhance productivity as you see your to-do list diminish. This progress can help you focus better and start your day successfully.

How to Start a Routine

Anyone can start a routine—the challenge is sticking with it. Follow these tips to turn your routine into a lasting habit.

1. Make a To-Do List

Staying organized is easier with a visible to-do list. Some may prefer a flexible approach, handling tasks throughout the day, while others might set aside specific times for activities. Whatever your style, crossing items off as you complete them can be satisfying.

2. Take Small Steps

Starting with small steps is crucial when introducing a new routine. Overhauling your entire day can be overwhelming and may hinder the formation of a new routine, so set yourself up for success by beginning with manageable changes.2

Start with something simple, like establishing a consistent bedtime or taking time for mindful meditation in the morning. This allows you to celebrate small victories and expand your goals when you're ready.

3. Personalize Your Routine

Remember, this routine is tailored by you, for you. Everyone has unique responsibilities and schedules, so no two routines will look the same—and that's perfectly fine.

Focus on areas you wish to improve, such as incorporating vegetables into every meal, turning off electronics an hour before bed, or walking daily for 30 minutes.

Avoid the misconception that you must rise at 5 AM to succeed. Consistency is what matters, not the time you wake up.

4. Remove Obstacles That Cause Stress

If your to-do list involves numerous decisions, try to minimize them to reduce stress and stay focused on personal priorities.

Consider signing up for automatic deliveries of groceries or essentials to save time and avoid overspending. Meal prepping and overnight oats are excellent time-savers for meals.

5. Have Flexibility for When Life Happens

While a predictable life might seem dull, it's rarely achievable. Allow some flexibility in your schedule and be kind to yourself when unexpected events occur.

6. Be Good to Yourself

Forming habits takes time, ranging from 18 to 254 days, depending on the person and the habit.3 Hold yourself accountable, but don't be too harsh if you miss a task. There's always an opportunity for improvement the next day.

We hope these six steps help you establish your routine and kickstart new healthy habits. Recall the commercials promoting "with vitamin D for growing strong bones." Now, as adults, we understand the importance of bone strength and the crucial role that vitamin K plays.

What are Vitamins D3 and K2 and What Do They Do?

Let's explore why these two vitamins are essential for the body, particularly in relation to bone and circulatory health.

Vitamin D3 for Bones, Immune Function, Nerves, and Mood

Vitamin D enhances the body’s absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Common sources include fish, eggs, and cheese, as well as exposure to sunlight. It supports bone growth, strengthens the immune system, maintains healthy nerves and muscles, and helps regulate mood.1,2 Additionally, vitamin D is linked to healthy skin and sleep patterns.

Vitamin D is available in two primary forms: D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). Studies indicate that D3 is more effective at boosting and maintaining vitamin D levels than D2.3

Vitamin K2 for Blood, Bones, and Metabolism

Vitamin K is crucial for producing clotting factors and proteins that support healthy bones and tissues. It comes in two forms: K1 (phylloquinone), found mostly in leafy greens, and K2 (menaquinones). K2 is particularly effective at directing calcium away from the arteries and into the bones, enhancing both bone and cardiovascular health.4 Unfortunately, MK-7, a subtype of K2, is not commonly found in the diet, which can lead to deficiencies.5,6,7

What are the Benefits of Taking Vitamins D3 and K2 Together?

Emerging research suggests that vitamins D3 and K2 are more effective when taken together, enhancing their combined benefits for bones, teeth, and cardiovascular health. They provide numerous advantages as daily dietary supplements, whether taken separately or together.

Strong Bones and Teeth

Vitamins D3 and K2 facilitate the effective transfer of calcium to the bones and teeth, promoting their health.8,9

Circulatory Health and Blood Clotting

Together, D3 and K2 regulate calcium levels in the body to support arterial health and cardiovascular function. K2 also activates proteins necessary for proper blood clotting.10

Mental Health and Mood Regulation

Vitamin D3 is associated with improved mood and general mental well-being. Together, D3 and K2 also support mental functions like focus and memory, as well as overall brain health.11

How to Take Vitamin D3 and K2

This dynamic duo is available in various forms, including capsules, powders, and gummies. For optimal benefits, it is advisable to choose combined supplements, which can be easily taken with breakfast or lunch.

Consider our BubbForest® veggie capsules, available in both low dose and extra strength options. These capsules feature the best-absorbed forms of vitamins D and K, supporting proper calcium utilization in the body. Our vegan D3 is derived from lichen, and the K2 is soy-free, sourced from chickpeas as MK-7.

Can Vitamins D3 and K2 Be Taken with Other Supplements?

Taking D3 and K2 alongside calcium and magnesium may enhance bone health benefits.13,14 Research shows that a combination of these nutrients is more effective than any single one alone.

It is not recommended to take D3 and K2 with other supplements that contain vitamin D, such as multivitamins.

Additionally, vitamins K and D can interact with certain medications. While this is not an exhaustive list, D3/K2 supplements may interfere with the following medications:

Warfarin, a blood-thinning medication, due to reduced anticoagulant effect and potentially increased risk of blood clots

Antibiotics

Thiazide diuretics (“water pills”), due to a risk of increased side effects

Some heart and cholesterol medications, such as certain statins and bile acid sequestrants

Always consult with your doctor before starting any dietary supplement, especially if you are taking medications.

Side Effects

Both vitamin D and K are generally well-tolerated. However, some individuals may experience mild issues with vitamin D, such as upset stomach, diarrhea, and nausea.

A Dynamic Duo Supporting Bone and Cardiovascular Health

We are eager to see what future studies reveal about the benefits of these essential vitamins, both individually and combined. What is clear is their significant role in supporting bone, dental, and cardiovascular health.

You be well, now.
BubbForest

About Patricia Weiser, PharmD

Patricia Weiser, PharmD, is a Pennsylvania-licensed pharmacist and independent medical writer with over 14 years of experience in community and hospital pharmacy. In fact, the term "cardio" is derived from "cardiovascular," which reflects its primary function of raising your heart rate. However, cardio workouts also increase your breathing and blood flow. Over time, this helps to enhance your body's aerobic capacity—its ability to use oxygen more efficiently during exercise.

What is Zone 2 Cardio?

The intensity at which you get your heart pumping defines the zones. Zone 1 is the slowest, which makes Zone 5 (you guessed it!) the highest. Determining your personal zones begins by identifying your maximum heart rate. According to the Cleveland Clinic1, your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. So, for example, at age 30, your maximum heart rate would be 190 bpm (beats per minute).

Zone 2 corresponds to 60%-70% of your maximum heart rate. You can calculate this by multiplying your maximum heart rate by 0.6 for the low end and by 0.7 for the high end.1

Knowing which zone you're working in is crucial as it also reveals what you're using for energy. As your heart rate increases through the zones, you burn more carbohydrates and proteins and less fat.2

Why Should Someone Do Zone 2 Cardio?

Zone 2 cardio, also known as “base cardio,” is generally a good starting pace, and one many people return to during their exercise routines. It’s typically a steady effort that you can maintain while talking intermittently with friends or singing along to your music. Zone 2 is a step up from a stroll, more like a gentle jog.

In Zone 2, your body is fueling itself with about 65% fat and only 35% carbs and protein.2 It’s also a crucial part of endurance training, since you should ideally be able to maintain it for long periods.

Another benefit of Zone 2 cardio is its health impacts. A 2003 study3 found that moderate exercise training for three months decreased blood pressure and heart rate, and improved the heart's ability to adapt to changing circumstances and needs.

In short, Zone 2 cardio helps you burn fat and build your body’s fitness, regardless of the type of exercise you prefer.

Ways to Do Zone 2 Cardio

Fortunately, there are many options for getting your heart into that key Zone 2 range. Prime examples include:

Cycling—There’s no set speed or distance that works for everyone; push yourself just a little and check your pulse to stay in the zone4

Jogging—A steady pace with a low-to-moderate, sustainable effort5

Rowing—A low-intensity workout that raises your heart rate just a bit6

Rollerblading or roller skating—A low-impact method that is easy to maintain in the Zone 2 sweet spot with a lower chance of pushing too hard7

Swimming—A moderate, sustainable pace, making it another excellent choice for getting your heart pumping without worrying about overdoing it8

Pickleball—This game’s fun, social pace may be just what you need for your Zone 2 cardio!

Walking does not typically count as Zone 2 cardio, but jogging does. Remember, it should elevate your heart rate to 60-70% of your maximum range but still be low-fatigue. Zone 2 shouldn’t cause difficulty in catching your breath. If you can't chat a bit with your workout partners, you’ve probably pushed up into Zone 3 or 4.2

Supplements to Pair with Zone 2 Cardio

As always, when undertaking an exercise routine, check with your doctor. Also, ensure you care for your body both before and after the workout. There are family, work, and community responsibilities to keep in mind, but you can’t forget one of the most important responsibilities of all: taking care of yourself!

When you’re a mom with a lot on your plate, “you time” is probably the first thing to get slashed from your calendar when schedules get tight. However, making time to take care of yourself is essential and can make everything else seem a lot easier because you’ll be more energized and centered, ready to face challenges head-on.

Here are five top health tips for busy moms, plus supplements to help nourish your body and mind:

1. Make Time for Self-Care

Like anything else in life, motherhood should involve seeking balance. Keeping a balance between raising children and taking care of yourself may be challenging, but it’s crucial. Make a commitment right now to respond to and respect your own needs and you’ll be happier, healthier, and better able to take care of your family too.

Stay mindful of your wants and needs and don’t lose sight of your interests or hobbies. You can do this even in small bursts of time. Write in a journal, meditate, read a good book, follow blogs about your hobbies, spend time in your garden, meet a friend for a walking date, or step it up a notch with some interval training—it’s up to you!

Remember to enjoy simple pleasures like relaxing in a hot bath, sneaking in a nap, giving yourself a mini facial, or singing along to your favorite songs. And learn about the benefits of using aromatherapy essential oils throughout your home.

Schedule some time every single day to do something that makes you feel happy and pampered, and treat that as a priority, because it is!

2. Get Your Steps In

You don’t need a strict workout plan or a gym membership to get your body moving! Small intentions can go a long way toward bringing more movement and vitality to your life. Get your blood pumping and help keep your body and mind feeling great by finding ways to be active every single day.

Whether it’s going for a walk or dancing to your favorite songs right in your living room, there are plenty of ways to get in your steps! Aim for 8,500 to 10,000 steps per day, depending on your fitness level, and slowly work up to that if you’re just getting started.1

Also, don’t forget to stretch daily to maintain a balance between strength and flexibility and help keep your joints healthy.2 Stretching helps keep your joints flexible as you age so it’s a healthy habit to start early. Stretch at least two or three times each week (daily is even better!). You can stretch while reading emails, watching your favorite show, or while the kids are brushing their teeth or bathing.

3. Fuel Your Body

If you’re short on time, it may be tempting to look for quick fixes instead of fueling your body with nutrition, but the good news is you can have the best of both worlds with a little advanced planning.

The first step is to pack your pantry with real foods and nutritious staples so you’ll always have healthy options on hand. This can include real food supplements as well as healthy snack options like fruits, veggie sticks, nuts, and yogurt.

Also, look for recipes that use just 5-7 healthy ingredients to simplify dinnertime without sacrificing nutrition. Make room for ingredients that nourish your brain too, such as avocado, coconut oil and dark leafy greens.

You can get a head start on the week by taking some time to plan your weekday meals over the weekend and doing a little prep work in advance so cooking on busy weeknights is less of a chore.

While you’re prepping, add some fruit slices to reusable water bottles or an infuser pitcher and top it off with filtered water to make your own delicious water infusions. It’s a fun and healthy way to stay hydrated, and it’s so much better for your family than most prepackaged drinks.

4. Kick-Start Your Day

Want to get ahead of the morning rush and carve out some extra time for yourself in the morning? Get started the night before! Enlist the help of a partner or the kids to make sure backpacks are by the door, clothing is picked out and ready to wear, and lunches are made before bedtime to make mornings less rushed.

If your children are old enough, help them establish nighttime and morning routines that encourage independence when age-appropriate. Make a dry-erase chart for them to follow in the evenings and mornings that includes tasks like picking out clothes, brushing teeth, packing backpacks, and eating breakfast.

Go for DIY breakfast options on weekday mornings, putting basic ingredients within their reach so they can make their own yogurt and berry bowls with granola, or have healthy cereal options on hand.

As for that mom time, give yourself some extra time before children wake up to get a healthy, mindful start to your own day. Even a 5-minute meditation routine can help keep you centered and focused all day long.

5. Get Those Zzzs

When it comes to taking care of yourself, sleep is one area where you don’t want to miss out. Getting too little sleep can affect your health and mood in numerous ways and may lead to serious, long-term issues.3

Adults need between seven to nine hours each night, and school-aged children need nine to 11 hours of sleep each night.4 Try setting a bedtime alarm on your phone to help you know when it’s time to head to bed.

Try getting to bed a little earlier to enjoy the many rewards of restful sleep. If you’re having trouble sleeping, start a nighttime routine that signals your body that it’s time to wind down. Found in various foods and metabolized by the liver, SAMe can also be synthesized and used as a supplement by those who may not produce enough naturally or obtain sufficient amounts through their diet. As a methyl-donor, SAMe transfers methyl groups to other molecules in the body, which are essential for accelerating or maintaining bodily reactions necessary for homeostasis.

SAMe plays multiple roles in the body, from the formation and breakdown of proteins and hormones to involvement in the final steps of serotonin and dopamine production through a process called methylation. It is commonly used as a supplement to support healthy mood and joint health.

What Does SAMe Do?

This nutrient is utilized for a variety of wellness needs, with the most common and researched applications being joint health and emotional support.

Healthy Mood

SAMe is widely used to support a healthy mood. As a naturally occurring compound, it may enhance mental wellness and mood stability.1 Dr. James Lake explains that SAMe acts as a methyl donor to many neurotransmitters and boosts serotonin and dopamine production. Research suggests its mood-supporting properties may be due to its ability to cross the semi-permeable blood-brain barrier (BBB).2

Joint Health

SAMe also supports joint health by promoting healthy collagen, which may enhance joint comfort and mobility.3 Although further research is necessary to confirm its long-term effectiveness, s-adenosyl L-methionine has demonstrated promising results in maintaining healthy joints.4

How to Take SAMe

SAMe, derived from the amino acid methionine, is naturally present in the body’s cells and functions as a methyl group donor in over 100 different reactions. It is crucial to ensure the body receives an adequate amount.

The most common forms of this supplement are SAMe capsules or tablets. Dosage varies based on the desired health benefit; for mood and mental health, the recommended dose ranges from 800-1,600 mg throughout the day, while for joint health, it ranges from 600-1,200 mg.5,6

As a best practice, always consult with your doctor before starting SAMe, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, taking antidepressant medication, or have bipolar disorder.

Sign up for BubbForest Health emails to stay informed about new articles and our best promotions.

Stay well.

BubbForest

About Amy Sunderman, MS, RD
Director of Science & Innovation, Registered Dietitian, BubbForest Health

Amy is a registered dietitian, nutritionist, and author with over 20 years of experience in the supplement industry. This discovery led them to further investigate why the body would have such receptors, uncovering a complex network of cannabinoid receptors in the cells of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

They officially named this network the endocannabinoid system.2

Decades later, our understanding of the ECS is still evolving, but it is known to aid the body in maintaining essential physiological functions.3

The ECS promotes homeostasis, or the body’s sense of internal balance among its various systems, by regulating sleep, mood, appetite, pain, inflammation, and reproduction.4

By fostering this balance, the ECS plays a vital role in overall wellbeing and many health areas, including healthy aging.5

The ECS consists of three main components: endocannabinoids, receptors (CB1 and CB2) that bond with endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids, and cannabinoids; and enzymes that help break down endocannabinoids and cannabinoids, allowing them to bind with the receptors.6

Endocannabinoids are neurotransmitters similar to cannabinoids that the body produces. They are the most abundant molecules in the body that bind to receptors.

The first and most prominent endocannabinoid discovered is anandamide, which affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems by acting on CB1 and CB2 receptors.

Anandamide has the highest concentration of receptors in the brain, which are essential for maintaining the central nervous system.

Scientists have noted that consistent aerobic exercise can increase anandamide production in the body, which then binds to CB1 and induces a calming effect as the enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) breaks it down.7

Consumption of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, flax, and hemp, has also been shown to enhance endocannabinoid signaling.8

CBD Hemp Extract & the Endocannabinoid System

Naturally-occurring CBD is the most prominent phytocannabinoid (a cannabinoid from plants) identified to date. Alongside CBD, numerous other cannabinoids like cannabichromene (CBC), cannabigerol (CBG), and cannabinol (CBN) have been discovered. CBD is simply the most well-known and extensively studied among them.

It is primarily derived from various cannabis species, but hemp notably contains high levels of CBD while maintaining very low (less than .3%) to undetectable levels of THC.

Current research indicates that small doses of phytocannabinoids from hemp and other plants can support the body’s endocannabinoid system and the signals it transmits through the peripheral and central nervous systems.9

Both CBD and THC bind similarly to CB2 receptors, but they elicit opposite responses at CB1 receptors.10

While THC directly binds with CB1, sending a signal that results in a “high,” CBD does not directly bond with CB1.

Instead, CBD disrupts any existing bonds between THC and CB1, maintaining the critical functions of the endocannabinoid system without inducing psychoactive effects.

CBD also inhibits the enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) from breaking down anandamide in the brain, thereby enhancing anandamide’s effects.

CBD Sources

As mentioned earlier, the most prevalent source of naturally-occurring CBD today is the hemp plant.

The 2018 Farm Bill officially classified “hemp” as cannabis varieties that, when dried, contain no more than .3% THC.11

Hemp has low to undetectable levels of THC while being rich in beneficial CBD, making it an ideal source for various products promoting wellbeing.

Other non-hemp sources of CBD include the peels of citrus fruits like oranges and the bark of evergreen trees.16

Researchers are also exploring methods to derive CBD from specific types of yeast, similar to processes used in bread leavening and beer brewing.12

3 Hemp-Based CBD Classifications

It is important to understand the different product labels for hemp-derived CBD, which include full spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate:

Full spectrum CBD hemp extract includes CBD, terpenes, and other cannabinoids (including trace amounts of THC) that were naturally present in the original plant.

Broad spectrum CBD hemp extract contains various terpenes and cannabinoids but excludes trace amounts of THC.17 Some manufacturers enhance their products by adding isolated forms of terpenes and other cannabinoids to increase potency. Manufacturers should provide detailed information on the terpenes and cannabinoids present in their products through third-party laboratory testing.

CBD isolate represents the purest form of CBD hemp extract, as it is isolated and purified to achieve the highest concentration of CBD, resulting in a product that is 99% pure and contains little to no THC.

These distinctions are crucial due to varying state laws and the specific needs of different CBD hemp extract consumers.

The classifications also illustrate why farmers and researchers continue to seek new methods for cultivating and extracting CBD from hemp and alternative sources.

If you found this article helpful, you might also enjoy CBD vs THC: Everything You Need to Know and 14 Adaptogenic Herbs for Healthy Stress Support. Once you’ve decided if CBD is a good fit in your health regimen, it’s important to also identify which form will work best with your lifestyle.

That’s why we put together this quick and easy guide to help you understand what CBD hemp extracts are (and aren’t) and how each form can work in slightly different ways to bring you the overall health and wellness benefits you’re seeking.

What is CBD?

Before diving into the various forms and types of CBD available on today’s market, let’s take a quick moment to answer the basic question, “What is CBD?”

First discovered in 1940, cannabidiol, called CBD for short, is a chemical found in cannabis plants. This chemical is one of more than 100 such phytocannabinoids known to exist among that species.1

CBD is distinct from another well-known phytocannabinoid: tetrahydrocannabinol, more often called THC.2 THC is most prevalent in the type of cannabis plant commonly known as “marijuana” and is described as “psychoactive,” meaning that it can have certain unusual effects on the human brain and nervous system.2 For this reason, possession and consumption of THC is considered unlawful by the federal government of the United States.3

By contrast, CBD is found more prevalently in the type of cannabis plant known as “hemp” and does not present any known psychoactive properties when ingested by humans.4

CBD hemp extract products must contain no more than .3% THC,5 thereby ensuring that they will not present psychoactive properties when consumed. This threshold is easy to maintain, given the very low amounts of THC present in hemp plants. All the same, CBD products are strictly monitored to ensure purity.

Now that we have a working understanding of what CBD is, let’s consider the numerous forms of CBD products available today.

What Forms of CBD are Available?

There are just about as many forms and types of CBD hemp extracts available as there are different reasons why people choose to use them as part of their health regimen.

Perhaps the most common form of CBD is liquid, although hemp extracts can also be found in the form of capsules and softgels.

Some prefer gummies or lotions as types of CBD that don’t require swallowing a pill, while others take their CBD extracts in the form of gels, sprays or even powders which can be added to beverages or recipes.

Whichever way you think you’d like to enjoy the benefits of CBD hemp extracts, there’s sure to be a form that fits just right into your lifestyle and health needs!

Let’s look at the different forms of CBD products by dividing them into internal and external applications.

Types of CBD for Internal Use

Probably the most common method for using CBD is internally. This means ingesting a form of CBD hemp extract so that it’s digested by the body for general health and wellness purposes.

Liquid CBD Hemp Extracts

Liquid CBD products generally exist in the form of oil tinctures which can be administered sublingually (under the tongue) or added to drinks or even food for internal digestion and metabolism by the body.

In this form, types of CBD oil may be unflavored or may include a pleasant taste like watermelon or mint. The flavor of any liquid CBD hemp extract you choose to try is unrelated to any health benefits derived from the oil and is simply a matter of personal preference.

While most liquid CBD products are administered using a dropper, there are also roll-on options for those who prefer to apply this type of liquid CBD externally (on their skin, rather than under their tongue).

Chewable or Swallowable CBD Hemp Extracts

These types of CBD products are very popular and primarily consist of softgels/liquigels. Tablets and caplets are also an option, as are capsules, including vegan softgels and vegetarian capsules.

For those who may be uncomfortable with, or simply dislike, swallowing a pill, there are also delightfully flavored gummies to choose from!

Lastly, some CBD hemp extract powder formulas are offered on the market which allow you to add your supplement to a beverage, such as a smoothie, or even sprinkled into your favorite recipe. The choice is yours!

You may find it interesting to note that some of these types of CBD supplement also include combination formulas. Such formulas may feature added ingredients like melatonin to promote more restful sleep, or they may include an herb like ashwagandha for stress support.

Sprays

One other way to enjoy CBD hemp extracts is as a mist or spray which is administered orally. Forms of CBD in this category will sometimes be flavored, such as with peppermint, and may include added ingredients for specific health goals, such as maintaining body weight.

CBD Snacks

One more way to enjoy the general health and wellness benefits of CBD is by eating hemp extract snacks like CBD chocolate bars. These bars offer a delicious way to consume your CBD while enjoying a tasty snack.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all supplements came in the form of chocolate bars?

Types of CBD for External Use

If ingesting CBD hemp extract internally doesn’t quite strike your fancy, another option is to use it externally. This means that you would apply your CBD extract outside of your body, generally on your skin, to be absorbed naturally.

One quick example would be CBD bar soaps which can be used quickly while washing your hands, or more luxuriously while taking a warm shower or bath.

There are also roll-on options for those who prefer to apply this type of liquid CBD externally.

CBD Lotions & Creams

Depending on your reason for adding a CBD hemp extract to your health regimen, another option might be to consider a CBD lotion or balm. These forms can be applied directlyCBD lotion or balm to the skin and are sometimes rubbed in, perhaps as part of a massage. They can also include lip balms.

Some balms may offer full-spectrum CBD for general health benefits, while others may include added ingredients for specific types of soothing effect. This is also true of CBD gel formulas.

As with other types of moisturizing or comforting lotions, these types of CBD may be scented, such as with lavender or eucalyptus. They may also include forms you may not have considered before, such as pet shampoos.

A Form of CBD for Everyone

CBD hemp extracts are some of the most dynamic and diverse supplements available on the market today. They come in many forms, reflecting the many reasons while people use CBD in the first place.

Whether you’re wanting a full-spectrum CBD product for general health and wellness, or a combination formula for more specific needs, there’s sure to be a type of CBD extract that’s just right for you.

BubbForest is proud to be your CBD headquarters, providing you with the knowledge you need and innovative products you deserve. Whether it’s due to work stress or a hectic schedule, there are numerous factors that can affect your mood.

Fortunately, you’re not alone in feeling this way. The American Psychological Association reports that about a third of us often feel under stress, while about half report that stress negatively impacts our personal lives.1

Thankfully, there are natural stress support allies available to help when you need it. No need to stress over your stress, after all! Knowledge is empowering, so let’s explore exactly what stress is.

What is Stress?

Understanding what you’re feeling is often the best starting point when figuring out how to improve your mood. That’s why having a clear definition is crucial. So, what is stress?

Think of it this way: stress is that feeling that arises when it seems like you can’t cope with certain pressures or even just when situations or events appear overwhelming. Stress is your body’s response to these pressures.2

We all know how stress can make us feel, and now we also have a clearer definition of what it is. The next question we should ask is, how can stress be relieved?

How to Relieve Stress?

Learning how to relieve stress can be one of the most crucial steps you take toward overall wellness since stress can negatively affect nearly every system in your body.

Some of the most well-known ways to relieve stress in everyday life include breathing exercises and learning how to meditate. It’s important to be mindful of how we’re feeling inside and remember to practice relaxation techniques like mindfulness and body awareness.

Sometimes even small changes to our environment can help relieve stress and boost our mood. Using an essential oil diffuser to release soothing scents is a popular form of aromatherapy often used to promote a calm mood.3 Some popular essential oils used in this way include lavender and sweet orange.

Of course, learning how to relieve stress is only the first part of establishing a robust stress support system. Sometimes we need a little extra assistance, and when that happens, considering some of the natural stress support allies available in supplement form may be beneficial.

What is the Best Supplement for Stress?

Several vitamins and minerals play an essential role in promoting a healthy stress response.

For instance, studies on the various members of the vitamin B family have demonstrated that supplements containing these nutrients can have a positive effect on stress.4

For example, vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) aids in regulating the adrenal gland (where stress hormones are produced), while vitamin B6 is known to help calm the nervous system.5

An essential mineral for stress support is magnesium. Magnesium helps stabilize your mood by regulating neurotransmitters in the brain, binding to calming ones and blocking more stimulating ones.6 This helps your entire body feel more relaxed during stressful times.

Herbs for Stress Support

Herbal supplements are also available for stress support, particularly a category known as adaptogens. Studies on this category of herbs have shown positive effects on increasing energy in response to stress-related fatigue and generally enhancing the body’s ability to respond healthily to stress.7

Adaptogenic herbs include the traditional Indian shrub known as ashwagandha. This remarkable herbal supplement has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic traditions, while recent scientific studies have demonstrated its ability to promote calm while also reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol.8

Another adaptogenic herb that offers natural stress support is astragalus root. This Korean herb has been clinically studied for its positive effects on improving general wellness as part of a healthy stress response and has traditionally been used in Asia to promote calm.9

Either herb can be taken in supplement form, but for convenience and added benefit, consider a combination formula that includes these and other stress-relieving herbs together.

Aside from the vitamins, minerals, and herbs we’ve already discussed, there are other helpful supplements available that can promote a healthy stress response.

An example is the amino acid L-tyrosine. A neurotransmitter, L-tyrosine works in the brain to help form mood-boosting serotonin and dopamine,10 both crucial to relieving stress.

Don't Stress Over Stress!

To lift your spirits and manage stress healthily, remember to get enough sleep, exercise often, and spend time with those who build you up and make you feel good about yourself. And don’t forget to consider adding a few of the supplements we’ve explored to your daily health routine!

Always serving our customers,

Your friends at BubbForest

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. You’re worn out from a long and busy day, but try as you might, you just can’t drift off into that restful sleep you so desperately need. Tossing and turning, you begin to ask yourself “Why can’t I just fall asleep?”

About 30% of the population report regularly having difficulty getting a good night’s sleep.1 These experiences can affect not only your quality of rest, but your overall health as well.2 Fortunately, there’s a natural sleep aid available that can help you experience your best sleep without habit-forming chemicals or a price tag that gives you nightmares—L-Tryptophan.

Experts now recommend adding a natural sleep aid to your bedtime routine3 such as melatonin or L-tryptophan. As a natural amino acid, L-tryptophan is not only a healthy option but is also recognized as one of the best sleep aids for those wanting a good night’s rest. Ensuring you have enough of it can have widespread impacts on your overall wellness. In fact, research has found that tryptophan depletion may negatively impact mood and cognition. Lack of sleep and stress have been shown to negatively impact the body's immune function. Supplementing with l-tryptophan for sleep support goes beyond sleep itself and has the potential to support general wellbeing.

What is L-tryptophan?

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the body is unable to produce on its own.4 L-tryptophan’s role in the body is to activate pathways that increase the chemicals necessary for the whole body to get a refreshing night of sleep and to promote normal cognitive function. For example, your body needs L-tryptophan to create serotonin, about 90% of which is located in the body’s GI tract. Serotonin is the hormone used by the brain to regulate your mood and sleep patterns.5 In this way, serotonin is one of the best natural sleep aids used by the body, and L-tryptophan is the essential tool used to produce it in the brain.

Tryptophan also plays a role in supporting the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and NAD phosphate (NADP), which are nonprotein compounds that assist in the processes that provide energy for cells.

How Can I Be Sure That I Have Enough L-Tryptophan for Better Sleep?

While it’s possible to find L-tryptophan in foods like poultry, red meat, eggs, or even dairy,6 some dietary restrictions preclude these items. It’s also difficult to ensure you’re regularly consuming the necessary amount of L-tryptophan based on diet alone.

Thankfully, this natural sleep aid is readily available as a supplement, meaning you can enjoy the benefits of L-tryptophan without worrying about dietary changes or inconsistent dosage.

Nature's Way to a Better Night's Sleep

When it comes to finding the best sleep aid, L-tryptophan certainly ranks among the top choices available on the market. Today’s health-conscious shopper is looking for something natural to aid their sleep patterns, and with the large number of scientific studies and trials7 demonstrating L-tryptophan’s effects on getting a good night’s sleep, this essential amino acid is more than just a sleep aid—it’s a supplement beneficial to your overall health.

In the past, you might have had to down glasses of warm milk or stuffed yourself with turkey legs in order to gain the beneficial effects of L-tryptophan, but these days it’s possible to enjoy the benefits without all the effort simply by supplementing your diet.

Taking a regular dose from a trusted source is crucial to your quality of sleep,3 and that’s what you can expect from L-tryptophan.

Always serving our customers,

Your friends at BubbForest

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. However, the energy boost from most coffees is typically short-lived, leading to an eventual energy crash. Fortunately, health enthusiasts have discovered a clever hack to enhance your coffee experience. Not only does this hack prolong your energy boost, it also adds a burst of flavor and numerous health benefits. Their secret ingredient? MCT-rich coconut oil. Prepare to elevate your coffee routine significantly.

What is MCT Oil?

MCT Oil is derived from medium chain triglycerides, a type of fat present in dairy products and especially abundant in palm kernel oil and coconut oil.1 Medium chain triglycerides are named for their 6 to 12 carbon atoms, unlike the 13 to 21 carbon atoms in long-chain fatty acids.2 The body processes medium-chain fatty acids differently than long-chain ones, breaking them down in the gut and liver into ketones that help enhance energy levels.2

Coconut Oil Coffee Benefits

Adding coconut oil to your coffee not only imparts a light, nutty flavor and a smooth texture but also offers a healthier alternative to many commercial coffee creamers. It is particularly popular among keto diet followers. Here are some benefits of infusing your coffee with coconut oil.

Supports a Healthy Weight

Incorporating coconut oil in your coffee, along with a balanced diet and exercise, can significantly enhance your weight management efforts. Coconut oil has been scientifically proven to increase levels of peptide YY and leptin, which promote satiety and may reduce food intake.3 Additionally, MCTs are known to increase energy expenditure and fat burning.4 They also provide an immediate energy boost, reducing the body’s need to store fat.5

Boosts Brain Function

Coconut oil in coffee might sharpen your cognitive functions. Research indicates that aging adults show improved brain energy utilization from ketones compared to glucose.6 Moreover, MCTs can cross the blood-brain barrier, enhancing brain cell energy and potentially stimulating the production of brain-derived neurotrophic growth factor (BDNF), which protects brain cells and promotes the growth of healthy neurons.7,8

Promotes Energy and Athletic Performance

Coconut oil is not only a superb fuel for brain function but also enhances overall body energy. When added to coffee, it helps extend the effects of caffeine, providing sustained energy. Studies show that coconut oil can increase fat burning during workouts and boost endurance during high-intensity exercise.9

It’s Keto Diet Friendly

Coconut oil coffee, which can be sweetened with keto-friendly options like stevia or monk fruit, complements a ketogenic diet perfectly.

How to Use MCT Oil in Coffee

Preparing coconut oil coffee is straightforward. Brew a cup of your favorite coffee—ideally an organic and sustainably sourced blend—and add a teaspoon to a tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil or liquid coconut oil. Blend until frothy using a blender, food processor, or immersion blender, then enjoy.

More Coffee Hacks to Enhance Your Brew

If you’re looking to add more excitement to your coffee, here are some healthy and flavorful tricks:

Add Spices: Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg on your brew for a delightful flavor boost.

Make Your Own Flavored Creamer: Combine milk or a milk substitute like cashew or almond milk with a sweetener of your choice to create homemade creamer.

DIY Coffee Syrup: Mix equal parts turbinado sugar and water, boil until dissolved, then flavor with extracts and spices as desired, cool, and store using a funnel and a bottle with a pour spout.

Give Your Beans a Flavor Enhancement: Store coffee beans with vanilla beans, organic cinnamon sticks, or orange peels to infuse them with flavor.

There you have it—a new and healthy way to enjoy your daily coffee buzz. While you might explore other types like butter coffee, coconut oil coffee remains a simple and beneficial addition to your morning routine, enhancing your health and wellness journey.

If you enjoyed this article, you might also like 2019 Wellness Trends for Crushing Your Resolutions and What’s the Buzz About Coffee and Caffeine? Also, be sure to sign up for BubbForest Health Emails to receive expert advice and our best promotions directly to your inbox.

About Lindsey Toth, MS, RD
Registered Dietitian, BubbForest Health Products

Lindsey is a nationally recognized registered dietitian and nutritionist with a soft spot for pie.
